What is fostering?

Fostering is caring for children and young people in your mother and childown home whilst their own parent/s are unable to look after them. Foster carers are needed to look after children of all ages, from a variety of racial and cultural backgrounds. Children with disabilities may also need fostering, and sometimes brothers and sisters require placements together.

Temporary foster carers look after children and young people for periods lasting between one day and several years; the average is somewhere in between. Children may move back to their birth families, but if this is not possible, plans will be made for them to move from their temporary foster carers to more permanent placements. Some teenagers move on to living independently when they are ready.
