What is sheltered housing?
Sheltered housing schemes give older people the privacy of a flat or bed-sit with the reassurance that a scheme manager is based on-site. Some extra help is available, such as the emergency Link Line alarm service, and shared facilities such as laundry rooms and communal lounges. All residents in sheltered accommodation will be contacted daily Monday to Friday.
What is supported housing?
Supported housing is similar but the level of support available from the scheme manager is more limited. All residents in supported accommodation will be contacted at least once a week, unless they have asked us not to do so.
How do I get it?
When you apply for housing or a transfer from your existing flat you will be given the option of being considered for a sheltered or supported scheme. You will need to complete a transfer form, which you can get from your local estate office. If you are a private sector or a housing association tenant you will need to complete a housing register application form.
Is there a charge?
You will be liable for your rent; the same as if you are in ordinary rented accommodation. You can apply for Housing Benefit to assist, again the same as if you are in ordinary rented accommodation. The Housing Benefit office will assess your claim and advise if you are eligible for benefit. In addition to your rent, you may be asked to pay a charge for heating and hot water in your flat, which are often at a set weekly rate rather than you having individual bills. This will be discussed with you when you are considering a move to a particular flat.
