Work, education and leisure

Enabling you to make the most of opportunities to get involved in work, education and leisure is important for quality of life and satisfaction.

Adult Education – Westminster Adult Education Service ‘is all about approachable adult education’, giving you more out of life. They run a variety of courses at a number of centres in the borough. They also have a Student Welfare Advice service to provide advice to students who have difficulties that are hindering them from getting on with their chosen course of study. www.waes.ac.uk

Centre for Independent Living – the Princess Diana Centre was built in 1998 as a day and resource centre for disabled people. The service is provided by Prospect Enabled Partnership and aims to facilitate disabled people to access community resources more effectively. You can find out more about the service by contacting your care manager, or the Physical Disability and Sensory Needs care management team.

Employment – the DirectGov website provides information on work schemes, (e.g. Access to Work), support available, and employment rights. www.direct.gov.uk/DisabledPeople/Employment/fs/en

Holidays – find out about holidays, planning and getting there on the DirectGov site, together with information on a range of organisations and charities that offer advice and information on travel and transport www.direct.gov.uk/DisabledPeople/TravelHolidaysAndBreaks/fs/en

Home Library – If you are a Westminster resident and find it too difficult to get to a library because you have a disability or long-term illness, or you are caring for someone who cannot be left alone, the Home Library Service will come to you if you have difficulty getting to a library.

Leisure - Westminster’s leisure facilities offer sports opportunities for everyone. The disabled, unemployed or those who are senior citizens can get free access to swimming by Concession Card use. 

Volunteering - Volunteer Centre Westminster has a range of services available to people who want to volunteer. www.volunteer.co.uk

Westminster Community Information Database – if you need help with a problem, if you are looking for a club or course to pursue an interest, or you are you wondering whether there is a tenants & residents association in your area, then the Community Information Database may provide you with just the information you want. It will give you access to details about a very wide range of organisations, groups, services, facilities and leisure activities, in and around Westminster.

Westminster Employment – is a specialist employment service dedicated to assist and support people with disabilities to find work. It offers one-to-one advice, guidance and support for those thinking about work, preparing or looking for work, and post-employment support.
