Big city, big clean up

Street sweeping barrowWestminster City Council is working hard to create a better street environment for everyone. Our first objective is to deliver clean, tidy streets throughout the City, 365 days of the year.

A core part of our work is educating and campaigning to change people's behaviour and attitudes towards the street environment. We need everyone to adopt a responsible attitude towards their own rubbish. This work is covered by our Big City Big Clean Up programme which includes specific campaigns such as the ongoing Don't Dump campaign.

In 2003 our efforts to deliver Clean Streets in Westminster were recognised through the achievement of the title "Britain's Cleanest City". This accolade is a testament to our efforts and determination to deliver Clean Streets despite the huge challenges we face. We are continuing to innovate and implement new initiatives as part of our Clean Streets programme.

Litter

Litter is a major health and environmental problem:

  • 26,000 tonnes of litter bin and street waste collected from Westminster streets every year
  • 65% (17,000 tonnes) of our street waste is from litter on the ground

Westminster City Council is committed to delivering innovative solutions to the immense pressures facing our street environment. But EVERYONE has a part to play in keeping our streets clean. Help us by remembering to:

  • Put all your litter (including food waste) in the bin
  • If you can’t find a bin take your litter home or back to the office with you
  • Dispose of cigarette butts in ashtrays – don’t litter
  • Notify your City Inspector of any litter problems on 020 7641 2000 (our dedicated Environment Action Line)
