On street charging points

Juice Points

Branding for Westminster's juice points

Westminster council's pioneering pilot project to install two on-street electric vehicle recharging points or 'juice points', is being extended.

The City Council has installed a further 10 on-street juice points at 5 further locations across the City. We now have a total of 12 juice points at the following locations:

  • 2 posts at Berkeley Square
  • 2 posts at Wilton Street
  • 2 posts at Sutherland Avenue
  • 2 posts at Manchester Square
  • 2 posts at Spencer Street (Behind City Hall)
  • 1 post at Wellington Street
  • 1 post at Southampton Street

The City Council is inviting any owner of an electric vehicle who lives or works in Westminster to register to use the UK’s largest network of on-street recharging points. Anyone interested in using the juice points should first apply for Westminster’s Electric Ecomark which is free.

To register:

Call 01273 704 775 or e-mail users@elektromotive.com or complete our Juice Point Application Form and return to the address on the form.

Membership of the recharging scheme costs £75 per year. All registered members will receive a membership pack including:

  • An information booklet to explain how the recharging posts will work.
  • A high visibility, yellow coiled charging cable, which must be used when recharging.
  • An individually programmed key which will allow access to the recharging point.
  • Access to the telephone help line in case of queries or issues.
  • The terms and conditions of use.

The installation of the above 10 juice points is the second phase of our pilot project. We hope to continue the expansion of infrastructure provision depending on sufficient take-up of the scheme and the use of these bays. We also have almost 50 electric vehicle recharging bays within our Car Parks, which are available to Westminster Car Parks Green Card scheme members.

Answers to some frequently asked questions are below.

How can I register to use the juice points? Firstly, you need to apply for an Electric EcoMark badge, which is available to anyone who lives and works within Westminster. When you get your badge you will also get an application form to join our on-street recharging scheme. If you wish to join the scheme there is an annual fee of £75. In order to be able to access and use the recharging posts you need your own individually programmed key and a yellow curly cable which we supply to you in your 'juice point welcome pack'.

Do I have to pay to register with Westminster Eco-Mark? No, registration of Eco-mark is free. You just need to live or work in Westminster to qualify. However, to use the on-street recharging posts you will have to register with the 'Juice point' scheme and this costs a total of £75 per year.

What do I get for my annual fee of £75?

  • An individually programmed key which will allow you access to any of our 12 posts
  • A high quality yellow curly cable which meets all outdoor recharging safety standards and minimises the risk of tripping to passing pedestrians and sight impaired pedestrians
  • Full instructions for use
  •  Access to a helpline to call if you have any problems while using the juice points
  • Access to recharging facilities at 12 useful locations across Central London

What kind of vehicles can use these bays? Electric-only vehicles.

How much does it cost to use the recharging points in the Masterpark car parks? If you plan to use any of the 48 recharging points across our 13 Masterpark car parks you must join the Masterpark Green Card scheme. This is an annual £200 flat fee and covers unlimited parking and charging costs at a nominated car park, which is incredible value for money.

Is this really more environmentally friendly? Electric vehicles produce zero tailpipe emissions, therefore they do not contribute the high levels of air pollution we have in central London. We would always encourage people to travel by public transport where possible, but we accept that it's not always practical or convenient. Electric vehicles offer a lower emission alternative. A recent report commissioned by independent consultants compared the whole life-cycle of all vehicle and fuel types and found 100% electric vehicles to have the lowest environmental impact, (especially if the electricity was generated form renewable sources). The full report can be viewed by clicking here.

Why not tackle the real causes of pollution, such all the cars that come through Westminster every day? Due to the location of Westminster we have an extremely high density of traffic. The Congestion Charge has made some progress in tackling congestion and the Low Emissions Zone will tackle the most polluting vehicles. Encouraging electric car use is another one of the ways that we can help to reduce air pollution. Changing people's car purchasing habits is the long term goal.

Will this make any difference? Absolutely. It's a very important start, and every small thing that people do to help reduce their environmental impact does help, from recycling to using less energy and driving electric-only vehicles.

Points to note

1. WWF have recently published a report into the benefits of electric vehicles - a full summary of this report is available by clicking here.

2. The people's environment initiative have started a petition for those keen on supporting their campaign 'ELECT ELECTRIC' raising the profile of the need for more electric charge points in and around cities here in the UK. If you are interested in signing the petition please click here.
