Edgware Road

The Edgware Road is home to a diverse community. The area is home to a mix of businesses, including many shops, restaurants and cafes. It is also a busy traffic route into the heart of London. During rush hour, more than 3,400 vehicles use the Edgware Road every hour.

The challenge:

The council is leading plans to make physical improvements to the area and other activity to support the local economy.

Where are we now?

• The council adopted the Edgware Road Action Plan in February 2006. At its heart is working in partnership to identify, promote and fund important improvements to revitalise the area.

The action plan also seeks to address the tensions that exist between different sections of the established residential community and the culturally diverse businesses.

• In 2006 the council consulted on street improvements to Old Quebec Street and in October 2006, we launched the Edgware Road Ambassadors’ Project. This is led by a group of local residents and traders who have volunteered to help identify local needs and priorities.

Looking ahead:

We are also working closely with Transport for London to implement much needed streetscape improvements to the Edgware Road, and initiating discussions with businesses interested in setting up a Business Improvement District.
