Statues and Monuments Supplementary Planning Document
Purpose
The Leader’s One City Speech identified a more restrictive Statues and Monuments policy as a priority for the protection of Westminster’s townscape. DES 7 in Westminster’s UDP, along with this guidance note currently make up Westminster’s published policy on statues and monuments. The supplementary planning document (SPD) will ensure that applications received for new statues, monuments and memorials are appropriate in terms of design and location. It allows the Council to make robust decisions on inappropriate monuments, despite the emotional and political pressure that sometimes accompanies such applications, and gives guidance on the processes and costs involved in erecting a new monument.
