Hanway Street

Hanway Street is an ancient lane cutting behind the major crossroads of Tottenham Court Road and Oxford Street. Today, this small conservation area has a lively urban character and mixed townscape.

Hanway Street is at the centre of the area and has an intimate character and charm, created by the narrow, curving streetscape and piecemeal way in which it has developed. The conservation area includes small frontages to the major shopping and traffic arteries of Oxford Street and Tottenham Court Road. Rathbone Place is a quieter retail and commercial thoroughfare, of a different scale and character to Oxford Street, and with a formal layout, yet diverse townscape.

Hanway Street was designated as a conservation area in 1990.
