Apply for planning permission
Do you need to make a planning application?
Anyone who wishes to carry out work on buildings or land may be required to, firstly, secure planning permission. Planning permission is necessary for a wide range of development, including relatively minor alterations that may affect the appearance or use of buildings.
The following provides a guide and you may need to apply for one or more consents.
- Planning Permission: erecting a new building, extending or altering the appearance of an existing building, changing the use of a building or land, or part of a building.
- Listed Building Consent: altering the character or appearance of a listed building, externally or internally.
- Conservation Area Consent: demolition of most or all of an unlisted building that is situated inside a Conservation area.
- Advertisement Consent: displaying a new advertisement or sign.
- Work to Trees (felling or pruning) protected by a Tree Preservation Order will require written consent from the council first. You must also write to us about any work to a tree in a conservation area and give us six weeks to respond.
- If you are carrying out new building work, you will probably have to comply with Building Regulations.
The planning portal provides a number of toolkits which may assist you. Please note however these are only intended to be a guide and may not fully reflect local requirements. In particular note that a high proportion of Westminster is designated as Conservation Areas and restrictions apply.
