The Sustainable Cities Summit
22nd November 2007
Central Hall
Westminster
The world is undergoing the largest wave of urban growth in history. In 2008, for the first time more than half of the world’s population will be living in towns and cities.
Cities really matter – they present unique opportunities for individuals and communities by connecting people, business, culture and innovation. With population densities set to increase, quality of life in urban environments is now one of the biggest global issues. The future quality of life in cities depends on the decisions being now. We must plan our towns and cities around people to tackle community decline, promote greater social, economic and environmental sustainability - to create liveable spaces.
Endorsed by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), The Sustainable Cities Summit was organised by Westminster City Council to consider how effective city management is essential to drive the sustainable communities agenda forward. The day was hosted by the Leader of Westminster City Council and Chairman of the LGA, Sir Simon Milton and delegates had the opportunity hear from and to question experts from around the world about best practice in building sustainable communities. The day comprised insightful talks and discussion forums on the following themes:
The summit was also attended by the chief executives, planners, civic leaders and city managers from over 50 cities worldwide and offered an unrivalled opportunity to meet and discuss issues of mutual interest with international peers.
The Sustainable Cities Summit marked the start of the LivCom finals 2007 that took place in Westminster from 23rd - 25th November. The LivCom Awards is the world’s only international competition to recognise best practice in the management of the urban environment. Over the course of the 3 days, the shortlisted finalists from around the world presented their case studies to the UNEP judging panel and international peers at the Thistle Hotel, Marble Arch.
