Frequently Asked Questions

New Business

Do I need planing permission?

Depending on where you want to run your business and what type of business it is you may need planning approval. Even if you intend taking over from an existing business it would still be wise to check that planning approval has been granted.

Can I run a food business from my home?

Initially, you will need to contact the planning department to check whether the business constitutes a change of use to your premises. If you proceed you should contact Environmental Health. Your home will then be inspected by a Food Safety Officer who will ensure that you comply with the same food safety standards as other food businesses.

My business will be near residential property. Are there any special measures I will need to take?

Yes, it is necessary to ensure that your premises are not the cause of a statutory nuisance to others in neighbouring properties. This covers matters such as smoke, fumes, gases, dust, steam, smell, noise or accumulations or deposits that are prejudicial to health or a nuisance
