Healthy Homes

Healthy Homes logoCold damp homes effect peoples health and it is widely recognised that cold damp housing can cause many social and mental health difficulties. Low indoor temperatures lead to cold-related illness, including respiratory & cardiovascular disease, while damp & condensation increases the risk of asthma and other respiratory conditions.

However, help is available. For the last four years the Healthy Homes scheme has assisted residents of all tenure, young and old, to a healthier home and better quality of life. The scheme is operated by the City of Westminster with the support of Westminster Primary Care Trust and can assist residents with the following:

  • Independent energy efficiency advice through a freefone helpline.
  • Grants towards heating measures, which can include the fitting of full gas central heating.
  • Grants & discounts for insulation, such as loft, cavity wall, hot water tanks and draught proofing.
  • Bringing problems to the attention of housing associations, estate offices and landlords on the client’s behalf, to improve their conditions.
  • Assistance towards Income maximisation and the cheapest energy suppliers.
  • All clients referred receive between two low energy light bulbs.
  • An Emergency Fund, which can be used to provide help quickly, for the most vulnerable service users.

There is a Freefone Help line for anyone who would like more information about the scheme. The number is a 0800 389 1943 or alternatively e-mail: healthyhomes@ecsc.org.uk.
