Introduction

Who are Educational Psychologists?

We have qualifications in teaching and psychology.
(Psychology is the study of child development, learning and behaviour).

Educational Psychologists apply their knowledge of psychology to children and young people in educational settings such as schools and nurseries.

Educational psychologists work with others to meet the needs and improve the learning opportunities for children with learning difficulties and other children. They consult with and advise teachers, parents and other professionals in relation to effective teaching and learning strategies for all children and the management of children with high level emotional needs.

The Westminster Educational Psychology Service ( EPS ) provides an assessment, consultation and advisory service to schools, pupils, parents, colleges, the LEA and other professional groups concerned with the welfare of children and young people. The EPS operates within Children and Community Services. It is funded by the LEA as a statutory requirement of Government's Fair Funding Legislation. Consultation, assessment and support, training and research are provided for organisations and individuals.

The service is committed to:
  • Developing positive approaches to learning for all pupils increasing self-esteem and independence in learning
  • Raising educational attainment levels in line with National Curriculum targets
  • Offering meaningful and appropriate education opportunities to all pupils
  • Working in partnership with parents, carers, schools, other support services and agencies to ensure high achievement for individual learners
  • Establishing carefully agreed goals and expectations with regular monitoring and review
