The aim of the St Mary’s Hospital Education Unit is to offer a broad and balanced curriculum, including the National Curriculum, through high quality teaching, to children and young people of school age, who are patients at the hospital, thereby continuing their education as normally as their incapacity allows.
Our work:
There is a school room, on Great Western Ward, where lessons are taught daily for those children and young people who are able to attend.
Bedside teaching is offered for children and young people in isolation units or otherwise unable to attend the school room.
Close liaison is maintained with parents/carers and medical staff during the child or young person’s stay.
Where a pupil is a long-stay patient, or has recurrent admissions to the hospital, contact with his / her own school is made in order to link with the pupil’s own school curriculum.
The use of ICT is key to enabling pupils to access a range of educational materials and to keep contact with their own schools.
