St. Marylebone School design proposal

Marylebone school design proposal

St. Marylebone  School (proposed design August 2007)

The information below provides a brief overview of the design approach and concept for St Marylebone CE Girls’ School.

St Marylebone School is a two-site school, with its main base off St Marylebone High Street and a second site, mainly for sixth form, nearby at Blandford Street. The High Street site will undergo refurbishment whereas a new building will be developed at Blandford Street, replacing a former hostel building while retaining and refurbishing much of the former convent building. The project also involves providing a Foundation Stage Unit (Nursery & reception) for the adjacent St Vincent's Primary School in the ground floor of the former convent.

The new buildings will not only provide additional accommodation for the existing student number but also allow this popular and oversubscribed school to expand. The school’s intake will increase by one form of entry – 30 pupils per year group - from 2010 onwards, with a proposed roll of 1025 - 750 students 11-16 years and 275 post-16 years.

The key features of the proposals include:

  • a new, modern and flexible teaching Centre at Blandford Street, mainly for pupils aged 14 to 19, which responds to current and future educational trends and embodies the school’s wish to have a University style facility;
  • improved internal circulation routes and the creation of larger classrooms by rationalising the existing buildings;
  • sustainable energy solutions such as solar panels;
  • a covering link between buildings at the High Street site to protect the flow of pupils, staff and visitors during inclement weather;
  • a design which compliments the adjacent Harley Street, Portman Estate and Regent’s Park conservation areas;
  • facilities to support the school’s specialism in Performing Arts, Maths and Computing

The proposed new building at Blandford Street will not exceed the height of the current building and the design is intended to harmonise with the adjoining buildings. The proposals are likely to be submitted for planning approval before the end of August 2007. Building work would be planned to start in early 2008 and the buildings will be completed in phases by February 2010 at Blandford Street and September 2010 at the High Street site.

The detailed construction programme is being finalised but may require some materials and equipment being delivered to the High Street site through the adjacent public gardens. At Blandford Street site part of the Cramer Street/Moxon Street car park will be used as a contractors’ compound and playground for St Vincent’s Primary School, while their existing rooftop playground is out of use during construction works. A temporary closure of part of St Vincent’s Street will also be sought.
