Building Schools for the Future

What is Building Schools for the Future?
Building Schools for the Future is part of the government’s national programme to transform educational standards for secondary school students. A key strand of the programme is to rebuild or refurbish all secondary schools over a 15-year period. BSF runs in parallel to Westminster’s Academy programme.

Westminster City Council has ambitious plans for significantly improved facilities at our secondary and special schools. Through the Building Schools for the Future and Academies programmes, we aim to give parents a wider choice of schools with higher standards, and to give our young people the best start in life. We see Information and Communications Technology (ICT) as a key driver in helping to deliver a transformation in our education provision.

What does this mean for Westminster?
Westminster City Council’s proposals amount to some £200m of capital funding. We have received government approval for our outline business case with proposals for extending, remodeling and refurbishing our seven secondary schools and two special schools. Each school has been holding consultation sessions so residents, parents, pupils and other stakeholders can have their say on these exciting new developments.

The Bouygues Partnership for Education and Community (BPEC) has been selected as the ‘preferred tenderer’ to deliver Westminster’s BSF programme. We are fast approaching financial close, which will bring Bouygues UK, education ICT specialist Ramesys, and Westminster City Council together to form a Local Education Partnership (LEP) to oversee the construction works at the Sample Schools and design development for the remaining six Non-Sample Schools throughout 2008.

Work is already underway at our three Sample Schools - Pimlico, St. Marylebone and Westminster City School. Click on the school links for details.
