Every four years electors within the City of Westminster vote to choose their elected representatives for their local area which is known as a ward. 60 councillors are elected within the City. Each of the 20 Wards elects 3 councillors.
Thursday 4 May.
Polling hours were between 7am and 10pm.
The count was held on the evening of the election, 4 May, and the results published on Friday 5 May.
Those electors (excluding overseas electors) on the City of Westminster Electoral Register as of 1 April 2006. The closing date to apply to be registered in time to vote in these elections was Monday 13 March. Any elector applying to register after 13 March was not eligible to vote.
In late February we hand-delivered elector cards to every property in Westminster. These cards showed the information that was held on the Register of Electors including every elector's nationality and whether or not they had registered to vote by post. Where there was a property with no record of anyone being registered, the card showed the reason why, ie; that the occupants were not eligible or that the property was empty. If for any reason the information was incorrect the card could be amended, signed, and sent back to change the register.
In early April we hand-delivered poll cards. These cards provided information such as the location of the polling station and the hours of poll. All electors, whether voting in person or by post, were sent a card confirming that they were eligible to vote at these elections.
Those voting in person could take this card to their polling station if they wished, but electors were still able to vote without it.
Electors who had already applied to vote by post at these elections, or at all elections, received a card confirming that they would be issued with a postal vote and setting out the timetable of when they were to be issued.
Any existing postal voter had until 5pm on Tuesday 18 April to change the forwarding address or to cancel an existing postal vote.
Anyone who had not yet registered to vote by post but wished to do so in time for the elections must have done so by 5pm on Tuesday 18 April.
