The Lord Mayor's Charities

During her year of office the Lord Mayor is fundraising for a locally based charity called for dementia.

for dementia (registered charity The Dementia Relief Trust) was founded in 1995 to take forward the development of Admiral Nursing.

The first Admiral Nurse service was piloted in Westminster in 1990 as an initiative inspired by the experiences of family carers. The Admiral Nurses were named in memory of Joseph Levy CBE BEM who had vascular dementia and was known as ‘Admiral Joe’ by his family and friends due to his love of sailing.

The charity has come a long way since its inception and now has in the region of 60 Admiral Nurses, specialists in dementia care, around the country, which are partly funded by the National Health Service. The charity has recently launched a helpline, Admiral Nursing DIRECT, serviced by Admiral Nurses offering professional advice and support via both email and telephone. The helpline number: 0845 257 9406, alternatively email direct@fordementia.org.uk.

Uniting carers for dementia began establishing a network of family carers in 2003, which aim to contribute to the field of dementia care in a variety of ways, including research, education and training, writing for publication, campaigning and fundraising.

for dementia training offers a range of courses for health and social care professionals delivered by approved freelance trainers, all of whom are specialists in dementia or older people’s care.

For further information please contact: for dementia, 6 Camden High Street, London, NW1 0JH (telephone number 020 7874 7210). Your support for the important work of this charity – registered number 1039404 – would be greatly appreciated.

In addition to this initiative for which the Lord Mayor is fundraising personally during her year, she is also Chairman of the CITY OF WESTMINSTER CHARITABLE TRUST. This registered charity makes small grants to locally based voluntary organisations and charities providing services for residents of the City.

This charity is administered by the Committee Secretariat within the City Council, and has a number of Councillors serving on the board of Trustees; but it is entirely separate from and outside the control of the local authority, and receives no direct financial support from the Council. Any donations will be used to help volunteer groups assist in helping the most needy in our local community.

The Lord Mayor attends community events in her capacity as First Citizen of Westminster and is, naturally, happy to do so as an important part of her mayoral duties.

Some organisations ask whether they can present the Lord Mayor with a gift to mark her attendance. If you were minded to do this, then the Lord Mayor would encourage you instead to make a donation to her chosen charity. Cheques should be made payable to for dementia and forwarded to the charity direct.
