The first traditional Chinese Gate is being planned in the West End to recognise the growth of Chinatown.
Spanning Wardour Street and the junction with Coventry Street, it will be the first truly traditional Gate in London. The well known structures currently in Gerrard Street are miniature western versions, as the street can not take the weight of a full arch.
Westminster City Council is working closely with the London Chinatown Chinese Association and the Chinese Embassy to seek funding to make the arch proposals a reality. Two traditional arch engineers are here at present to assist in the process and also ensure that it is located according to the principles of feng shui.
The City Council has an extensive workplan over the forthcoming three years in Chinatown which incorporates a whole host of improvements in Gerard Street and Lisle Street. Plans are currently being discussed to bring about the pedestrianisation of Lisle Street, further solidifying the position of Chinatown as a must see destination in the West End.
Cllr Danny Chalkely, Cabinet Member with responsibility for the West End, said:
"A new gateway to Chinatown will further enhance the reputation of Chinatown and is recognition of the valuable contribution the Chinese community has made to London and the UK.
"Working with the local community and the Chinese Embassy we will ensure that the arch incorporates the best in traditional design techniques.
"The geographical position of the arch is recognition of the expansion of Chinatown into the south side of Wardour Street and will entice many of the thousands of people who go into Leicester Square to explore the wonders of Chinatown".
