The Committee’s main role is to examine the provision of services for children and young people in Westminster and ensure that they are provided to the highest possible standard. The Committee also scrutinises the provision of Adult Education. Operating in a similar manner to a House of Commons Select Committee, Members can make recommendations for improvement to service providers and share best practice. Key strategic issues are considered at each meeting of the Committee and separate task groups scrutinise issues in more detail. Councillor Nickie Aiken is the chairman of the committee.
The Committee can also establish task groups to look at certain issues in more detail.
In addition to Councillors, members of the Committee include Parent Governor Representatives, Headteachers and Diocesan Board Representatives. These Co-opted members bring a great deal of expertise and first-hand knowledge of the education sector to the Committee and they are fully involved in the Committee’s work.
